How To Care For Brushed Microfibre Lingerie
Brushed microfibre is designed for daily luxury, but a little extra TLC during laundry day will ensure that "brand-new" softness stays with you for years. Follow these simple steps from our own in-house expert - Siobhan Hayman, Senior Garment Technologist at Boux Avenue - helping you to protect your new favourite sets.
1. Hand Wash Where Possible
To maintain the velvety texture, hand washing is always the gold standard.
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water (never hot!) and a capful of gentle lingerie wash.
- Swish the items gently - avoiding any aggressive scrubbing - and rinse thoroughly in cool water.
2. The "Safe" Way To Machine Wash Your Lingerie
If you’re short on time and using a machine, protection is key:
- Use a Mesh Laundry Bag: This prevents your microfibre from rubbing against rougher fabrics like denim or towels, which can cause pilling.
- Cold & Gentle: Set your machine to a 'Delicates' or 'Hand Wash' cycle at 40°C or lower.
- Fasten the Hooks: Always hook your bras before washing to prevent them from snagging the microfibre of your matching knickers.
3. Skip the Fabric Softener
It sounds counter-intuitive, but fabric softener is a no-go for microfibre. The chemicals in softeners can break down the elastane, leading to a loss of that perfect "stretch and recovery" fit.
4. Avoid the Tumble Dryer
Heat is the enemy of elasticity. High temperatures can "cook" the delicate fibres, making them brittle and causing the brushed surface to lose its softness. Instead, lay your lingerie flat on a towel or hang it to air dry away from direct sunlight or radiators.
5. Store with Care
To keep your microfibre bras looking pristine, avoid folding the cups into one another, as this can cause permanent creasing in the padding or fabric. Instead, stack them behind one another in your drawer -"spooning" style - to maintain their architectural shape.
