The Best Lingerie To Wear Under Your Wedding Dress
This one is for all brides-to-be! We know you have a lot on your plate right now - organising the venue, finalising the RSVP list, gathering everyone’s dietary requirements and more, but there are also the magical moments in wedding planning including finding your perfect wedding dress. Once you have found “the one”, it is important to also think about your bridal lingerie for the special day and night. In this blog we will go through all the different bra solutions to help you find your perfect match and ensure there are no mishaps on your big day.
The Importance Of Finding The Right Wedding Dress Lingerie
On your wedding day you want the perfect lingerie that compliments your wedding dress ensuring you feel comfortable all day long. Trust us - your wedding day will fly by in a blur but it is also a long day from start to finish. This means it’s key to ensure you aren’t wearing anything too tight that you can’t breathe in or eat properly, have the bra slipping down that you are constantly hoisting it back up throughout the day (not a good look for the candid photos), and here is the big one - you don’t want to have that dreaded visible panty line! So it is important to find the right knickers and bra that fits comfortably, streamlines the figure, and in the right shade to your skin tone / dress. What you really need is lingerie that is invisible under your wedding dress
Things To Consider When Choosing Your Wedding Dress Underwear
When it comes to buying your wedding dress lingerie there are several things to consider to help find the right lingerie solution for you. Firstly not all wedding dresses require a bra as some come with padding and built in support. This may be something you want to check with your dress supplier or seamstress if having fit alternations to the dress, and discuss with them if you actually need a bra with your dress for the day.
If you do decide to go ahead with wearing a bra with your wedding dress you will want to ensure you follow the below steps for a comfortable fit.
- Size - wearing the correct bra size offers the utmost support, whilst feeling comfortable all day long. You can take advantage of Boux Avenue’s free in store bra fitting appointments, where our experts will be able to advise what your bra size is, along with the best styles of bras for your bust shape. Don’t have a Boux Avenue store near you - not to worry as we have pulled together a guide on how to measure yourself, to find your correct bra size.
- Colour - You want to ensure you are choosing the right colour that looks invisible under your dress.
- Right Style of Underwear For Your Dress - Do you need a strapless bra? A bra with a deep plunging neckline or high waisted briefs?
- Material - Tighter fitting and satin style dresses may require for you to wear microfibre seamless underwear for no VPL, whereas a dress with lots of layers will allow for you to wear a more lacy number.
What Colour Underwear Should You Wear Under A Wedding Dress?
We asked our Senior Lingerie Buyer, Nia Davies, to offer her expert advice on the best colour choices when choosing lingerie to wear under your wedding dress.
“The key is to choose lingerie that closely matches your skin tone rather than the dress itself to create the most seamless look.
While white knickers might seem like the most obvious choice under a white dress, it's not always the most discreet- a well matched nude tone lingerie is usually the safest and most invisible option. Ivory fabrics with a slighter warmer undertone also work well with nudes or even light blush shades. For champagne dresses you could choose a slightly warmer, deeper colour but ultimately still a tone that still complements your skin.
The goal will always be to create an invisible foundation to let the dress take centre stage.”
Choosing The Right Wedding Dress Bra By Your Dress Shape
When choosing your wedding lingerie you want to ensure that it is invisible and compliments your dress. We have pulled together a quick dress to bra style guide to help you find your perfect match.
| Dress Style | Bra Style |
|---|---|
| Strapless or Bardot Dress | Strapless or Multiway Bras |
| Plunging Neckline Dress | Plunge Bra |
| Low Back / Backless Dress | Stick-on / adhesive bra, nipple covers, or boob tape |
| Halterneck Dress | Multiway or Strapless Bra |
| Square Neckline Dress | Balconette Bra |
The Best Bra For Strapless Wedding Dresses
If your wedding dress is strapless or has a bardot neckline - an off the shoulder style that sits below the shoulders and collarbone - the best bra style choice for these dresses would be a strapless bra.
The Strapless Microfibre Multiway Bra comes with a wide underband featuring three hooks and eyes to help provide extra support to the bust without the need for straps, along with non-slip silicone elastic on the underband to help ensure the bra stays in place. Available in five different colourways from classic white and black, to different skin tones and with the microfibre material the bra is seamless and invisible under clothing.
The Best Bra For Plunge Wedding Dresses
For those whose wedding dress has a plunging neckline we would recommend a plunge bra. If the bra is strapless with a plunging neckline our Strapless Microfibre Bra comes with a plunge neckline up to a size 40D, for DD+ sizes the strapless bra turns into a balconette style.
A plunge bra comes with a deeper plunging shape making them perfect under low-cut necklines. These are a sexier style bra by pushing the bust together, creating a sexy uplit and pert look. Our current favourite is the Addison Lace Plunge Bra, crafted with a beautiful eyelash lace, adding some elegance to your lingerie, whilst detailed with mini pale blue bows on the centre front of the bra and bottom of the front straps - adding your ‘something blue’ to your look.
The Best Bra For Low Back Wedding Dresses
If your wedding dress has a low back or is completely backless a stick on bra makes a great option, or alternatively there are a lot of other bra solutions to be able to choose from.
At Boux Avenue we have two backless bra options - The Backless and Strapless Bra, which comes with silicone adhesive wings to help stay in place, along with underwire support. Or the Stick and Clip Bra with silicone adhesive cups, and a front fastening to help pull the bust together for a great shape. With backless bras it is always important to check the safety instructions, and follow the application and removal process thoroughly.
If you don’t want to wear a bra, but would still like a solution to ensure there is full modesty you could go with our Silicone Nipple Covers, that are activated by body heat, creating a firm and natural seal that is gentle on the skin. Wanting a solution that will lift the bust, this can be achieved with Breast Lift Tape - you may want to practice a bit at home first to ensure you know the correct amount to use and best positioning for your bust and dress.
The Best Bra For Halterneck Wedding Dresses
Your wedding dress comes in a halterneck design - we would recommend a multiway bra, offering versatile multiway variations. The Strapless Microfibre Multiway bra - comes with fully removable straps, allowing the wearer to create a halterneck strap - if would like a strap to feel more supported, or remove the straps completely for a strapless bra. Both these options will offer an invisible and seamless finish under your dress.
The Best Bra For Square Neckline Wedding Dresses
For a square neckline wedding dress, the best bra option would be a balconette bra. This style bra works well with low cut and square necklines, whilst offering a natural lift and support to the bust for a beautifully rounded shape.
A current favourite of ours is the Calla Embroidered Balconette Bra, coming in a bridal white, this sheer bra is beautifully detailed with mini heart embroidery (showing some love on your wedding day), and a sophisticated geometric edge along the cup with pink ribbon slot detailing adding a touch of femininity and romance to the bra.
Don’t Forget Wedding Knickers
Now you have found your match with the right style bra for your wedding dress, but don’t forget about your knickers too. When choosing your knickers it is also important to consider the following points to help you find your ideal style.
If your dress is more body hugging, or made from a thinner material for example a silky satin you will want to go with No VPL Knickers, these are usually a seamless style made with microfibre for an invisible finish under your clothing.
Don’t forget about the shape of your knickers. Thongs offer barely there coverage, making them a great style to help avoid any visible panty line. If you would prefer more coverage High-Waisted Knickers can offer a seamless shape and ensure no digging in around the hips for a smoother silhouette.
When To Buy Your Wedding Dress Underwear
Now you may be thinking when is the best time to buy my wedding dress underwear? This is something you would not want to look into until you have chosen your dress, as the style of the lingerie all depends on the style of the dress, along with material choice and colour.
We would advise you to purchase your lingerie before your final dress fitting. This way you can test it out at your fitting with your seamstress and ensure everything looks seamless and invisible, that nothing is on show that shouldn’t be.
