Online Dating Dealbreakers

Dating this past year has been tough. Unable to go outside and meet any potential baes, we’re relying more on online dating apps like Tinder, Hinge and Bumble for lockdown flirting and bants.

But this hasn’t stopped us from knowing exactly what we want — and being super judgemental about what we don’t!

We asked our Boux Insta followers to tell us exactly what they look for in online dating profiles: the dos and the ones that make us facepalm IRL! Over 88,000 responses have shown us exactly what we want and what is 100% a dealbreaker.

He’s gotta look the part

Gone are the days when a man bun and beard would get pulses racing. Over three-quarters say long hair or a beard is not the one. Get the razors out, guys!

Anyone who’s used an online dating app will know it’s become the norm for guys to be upfront about their height in their bio. But for the guys out there worrying about ladies judging them harshly for not being 6”4, chill! 60% of women don’t care about height (so long as you’re taller than us, that is…)

And nothing gets us going like a man with tats! 70% say they looooove it when a man shows off his ink.

Pictures speak a thousand words!

Photos make a dating profile – who has time to look through a whole profile when you can just swipe through pictures instead? Pictures provide key deets on a potential match, telling us who they are and what they like doing.

4 in 5 women care who’s in a picture with a guy. Pics with loads of girls or on holiday with the lads make him look like a player. And guys might think selfies are great for showing how they look up close, but two-thirds of us think selfies are vain.

He thinks he’s hot for going to the gym and having a cool car, but 70% of us are put off by a gym or car selfie (and there are SOOOO MANY.)

With so many online dating red flags, what should guys have a photo with?

A cute, fluffy pet, duh! Ideally a puppy: 80% of women prefer a cute dog to a cat.

Okay, he’s cute — but what about his dating profile bio?

First impressions are important, right? Every word counts!

It’s the song lyrics, quotes and cheesy pick-up lines in his bio for me… 70% find this lame.

And we run at any mention of being a mummy’s boy!

The final hurdle: has he got good chat?

Yes guys, you’ve gotta chat with us and get to know us first. Asking to meet up straight away is waaaaay too keen.

Confidence is hot, but over-confidence is a turn-off!

And there’s nothing that makes us NOPE out of there like a guy straight up asking for a pic. Do this, guys, and 94% will delete and block.

He’s ticking all the boxes — time for date night!

He’s got tats. He’s got a puppy. His chat is on point. But if he doesn’t ask us out quick, we haven’t got time for it.

Once social distancing ends, we’re so ready for a Saturday night date with our new match. Three-quarters of us are flattered when a guy wants to spend his Saturday evening with us, and we can’t wait to wow him with a sexy little something!

If none of our matches are up to scratch, who cares? Yes, we’ve got high standards — because we deserve the best! If none of them are hitting the mark, it’s fine: we’ve still got the most important person to spend Valentine’s Day with, which means ‘me time’ — lighting some candles and putting on a cute new lace teddy or intimate set. Turns out, the perf date was right here all along!
