Why Checking Your Breasts & Chest Regularly is Important

It may be National Boob Day, but checking your chest shouldn’t be done just once a year. CoppaFeel! recommend checking once a month, so you incorporate knowing what your chest looks and feels like over time...

Being chest aware and developing a regular breast checking routine doesn't happen instantly. It’s all about practice. It can be helpful to practice checking more frequently in your first month or two, so you can become more familiar with what you’re doing and how your body changes throughout the month.

CoppaFeel! tries to help remove all barriers to checking so if you are struggling to remember to check you can sign up to their monthly text reminders by texting CHECK  to 82228. Every month your phone will remind you that it’s time to coppa feel!

There is No One Right Way to Check Your Breasts

CoppaFeel! advocates that there is no one way you should be checking your chest. It should be any way that feels comfortable for you, ensuring you’re both looking and feeling and it is important to be aware of the signs that can occur.

You could check lying in bed, in the shower, in the mirror, sitting down, or even when applying your favourite body lotion, suncream or showergel. Try it a few different ways, and see what works for you!

Your chest can change throughout your life (and each month if you have periods), so get to know the rhythm of yours; the changes, look and feel over time. If you get to know this natural pattern, you’ll be in the best place to identify when something is unusual for you.

Let’s Check Your Chest!

When we say check your chest, we mean the area from your ribs up to your collarbone and armpits, including your nipples.  Make sure that you look and feel your chest and notice any changes in size, outline or shape and changes in skin such as thickening, puckering or dimpling.

Be sure to have a feel and be aware of any or any unusual lumps, bumps or swelling, including in your armpit or around your collarbone.

When checking your breasts, also check your nipples. Be aware of any nipple discharge, any bleeding from the nipple, any rash or crusting on or around your nipple area and any change in the position of your nipple.

What’s Next?

So you’ve checked your chest, so what next? If everything seems normal for you, that’s great! But if you did notice something unusual, try not to panic. Monitor the change and if you’re worried speak to your doctor and they can help you with the next steps.

Most changes to your chest are natural but it’s important to get checked out as early detection is key. When breast cancer is found early, treatments are more effective and survival rates are higher. Checking your chest regularly and seeking help about any unusual changes is always the right thing to do.
