WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO WASH BIKINIS & SWIMSUITS?

Most swimwear is suitable to be popped in your washing machine on a delicate cycle.

Surprise, surprise though - when it comes to washing bikinis, the best method is the gentlest one; handwashing. Handwashing lets you control temperature, pressure, and friction, which is crucial for protecting delicate swimwear ties and fabrics. After all, no one wants their triangle bikini to end up too tiny!

HOW TO WASH SWIMWEAR IN THE WASHING MACHINE

Short on time? We've got a few simple pointers to make washing machine work for your swimwear.

Here's how…Firstly, ensure bands and straps are tied to prevent them from getting tangled. Next, place your swimsuit in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging or stretching. Use a gentle cycle and cool water to prevent color fading and damage to the fabric.

Add the mildest detergent you can find, ideally one designed for delicate fabrics like you would use for washing your lingerie, to ensure a thorough yet gentle clean. As soon as the machine beeps that it's finished, take your swimwear out straight away and lay it flat on a towel to air-dry. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as heat can cause shrinkage and compromise the fabric's elasticity.

With the right care, machine-washed swimwear will maintain its quality and vibrancy, ready for your next summertime dip.

HOW TO HAND WASH SWIMWEAR

How to hand wash swimwear gently yet effectively? If nothing else, prioritise the water temperature and your swimsuit's soak time. Ensure the costume or bikini is entirely submerged in water that feels lukewarm rather than hot, and leave to soak for at least 20 minutes.

Lightly massage the fabric to remove any odor or dirt residues (diluted vinegar works wonders for fresh-smelling swimwear), then rinse with cool water until it runs clear and - most importantly - avoid wringing it out at all costs! Remember that wringing, scrunching, and twisting will likely stretch the polymers of your suit's fabric. Not ideal when you want a body-skimming fit for beach bar sundowners.

When it comes to drying that bikini, lay it flat on a towel to air dry, away from direct sunlight. This will ensure it retains its shape and elasticity for plenty more beach days to come.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SWIMWEAR BETWEEN WASHES

What about between washes? Keep that bandeau beautiful in 3 simple steps:

1. Rinse (in cold water, pre-swim).

2. Rinse again (same thing, immediately after-pooltime).

3. Store safely: If possible, your swimwear should enjoy its very own dedicated drawer in a cool, dry part of your wardrobe. Keep it away from any snag risks (read: sequins, zippers) and air it regularly.

Voilà - fresh, clean, and long-lasting swimwear is all yours.
